A legend tells that it was the knight Ricciardetto Della Gherardesca who first introduced these sweets to Tuscany on his return from the crusades to his castle near Volterra. They reminded him of the shoes with the curled toe typical of Middle Eastern footwear, hence the name Ricciarelli “curled up”.
